Acosta back out front: KTM reignites World Championship ambitions

Pedro Acosta stole the show on Saturday at the Catalan Grand Prix and put KTM back on pole position after a very long wait. At the Barcelona circuit, the Spanish talent built a perfect qualifying session, aggressive but clean, ending a drought that had lasted 588 days and sending a clear message to the MotoGP paddock: the title fight is far from over.

The feeling, already apparent on Catalan Friday, is that the RC16 has found a much more competitive technical balance than in the first part of the season. Acosta made the most of the bike’s stability in the fast corners and effective traction in the final sector, characteristics that allowed him to make the difference at the decisive moments of Q2.

At the end of the session, the Spaniard spoke of a feeling finally rediscovered with the KTM’s front end, stressing how the team’s work in recent weeks has changed his approach to riding. The result achieved in Barcelona represents not only an important pole on the statistical side, but also a display of mental strength after difficult weeks.

MotoGP Barcelona: Morbidelli surprises, Álex Márquez confirms his progress

VR46 returns to the spotlight with a strong front row

Behind Acosta will line up Franco Morbidelli, probably the author of his best qualifying session of the year. The rider from the VR46 team managed to build his weekend with patience and consistency, going through Q1 to a surprising second place overall.

Morbidelli showed a Ducati that was extremely effective in time attack, especially under the hardest braking points on the Catalan track. The Italian rider highlighted significant progress over a single lap, an area that in recent seasons had often been his main weakness.

Álex Márquez also confirms his positive form. The Spanish rider from the Gresini team continues to be one of the most consistent riders of the season and, after the fastest time in free practice, finished qualifying in third place, further strengthening his ambitions.

Competitive Ducati, but still without a true dominator

The feeling in the Ducati pits is twofold. On one hand there is satisfaction at the competitiveness shown by the satellite teams; on the other, it remains clear that there is no rider capable of imposing absolute dominance.

Álex Márquez explained how the Desmosedici has improved especially in cornering, allowing him to be more effective in Barcelona’s long corners. However, the gap to KTM appears small and the Sprint Race could turn into a much more even battle than expected.

Aprilia under pressure: crashes for Martin and Bezzecchi

The Catalan weekend becomes complicated for the World Championship protagonists

If KTM is smiling and Ducati is trying to chase, Aprilia leaves Saturday in Catalonia with more doubts than certainties. Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi, two of the most anticipated riders of the weekend, were involved in heavy crashes that affected the entire qualifying session.

Martin, fresh from his Le Mans success, never managed to find consistency over the course of the day. The Spanish rider suffered from grip issues and a lack of confidence in fast direction changes, factors that led him to push beyond the limit on several occasions.

Bezzecchi, the current world championship leader, seemed instead to have the potential to challenge for the front row before the decisive crash during his final Q2 attempt. The Italian rider suddenly lost the rear through the mixed section of the circuit, ending a lap that had looked very competitive.

Aprilia looks for answers ahead of the Sprint

In the Noale pits, the work will now be focused above all on tyre management and electronics. The riders complained of unstable behaviour from the RS-GP in phases of maximum lateral load, especially with used tyres.

The Sprint Race could therefore become a fundamental test not only for the immediate result, but also for understanding the bike’s true potential over race distance.

Bagnaia out of the fight for pole: a comeback is needed

Official Ducati still struggling on a single lap

Francesco Bagnaia’s Saturday continues along the same lines as the last few races: speed at times convincing, but too many difficulties at the decisive moment of qualifying. The Italian champion will start only from thirteenth position after a weekend that has been complicated since Friday.

Bagnaia continues to complain of a lack of confidence under braking and an unstable feeling at the front, a problem that forces him to ride with a margin precisely in the sectors where his rivals are able to make the difference.

The Sprint race will therefore be a very delicate challenge. On race pace, the Ducati rider seems to have enough rhythm to recover positions, but starting so far back on a track like Barcelona risks complicating the whole weekend.

MotoGP Catalonia 2026 Sprint Race: total balance between KTM, Ducati and Aprilia

The feeling after qualifying is that the Catalan Grand Prix could become one of the key stages of the MotoGP 2026 season. KTM regains a hugely important pole with Acosta, Ducati tries to rely on the solidity of the customer teams and Aprilia is called on to react after an extremely nervous Saturday.

With Marc Márquez still absent through injury, the balance of the championship continues to change race by race. The Barcelona Sprint could therefore be much more than just a Saturday race: it could be the moment when the season definitively changes direction.
