A historic partnership comes to an end
The relationship between Francesco Bagnaia and Ducati has become one of the defining stories of modern MotoGP.
After winning the Moto2 World Championship, Bagnaia continued his career within Ducati’s project, gradually becoming the face of the Desmosedici and one of the most successful riders in the manufacturer’s history. His MotoGP world titles, numerous victories and countless podium finishes helped establish Ducati as the benchmark in the premier class.
Over the last eighteen months, however, the dynamics inside the factory team have changed considerably. The arrival of Marc Márquez created a new competitive environment within Ducati, while the approaching 2027 regulations encouraged every manufacturer to redefine its long-term strategy.
Against this backdrop, Bagnaia decided it was the right time to embrace a fresh challenge and become the cornerstone of Aprilia’s future development programme.
Bagnaia: “I wanted a new challenge”
Following the official announcement, Bagnaia explained that the decision had been carefully considered over several months.
The Italian rider expressed his gratitude towards Ducati for the opportunities, victories and unforgettable moments they shared together, while also highlighting the confidence Aprilia showed in him from the very beginning of the negotiations.
Bagnaia described the move as an opportunity to build something special from the ground up, becoming a central figure in the development of the next-generation RS-GP ahead of MotoGP’s biggest technical revolution in years.
Despite announcing his future, the two-time MotoGP World Champion made it clear that his full focus remains on the remainder of the 2026 season, with the ambition of ending his Ducati career in the strongest possible way.
Aprilia makes its biggest statement yet
For Aprilia Racing, the arrival of Bagnaia is much more than a rider signing.
It confirms the manufacturer’s growing ambitions and reinforces the work carried out over recent seasons to establish itself as a genuine title contender.
CEO Massimo Rivola described the agreement as a landmark moment for the Italian manufacturer, stressing that signing a rider of Bagnaia’s calibre demonstrates how attractive the Aprilia project has become ahead of the new technical era.
Bagnaia is expected to join Marco Bezzecchi, creating an all-Italian factory line-up capable of combining experience, speed and technical feedback to accelerate the development of the 2027 machine.
Ducati prepares for a new generation
While Aprilia celebrates one of the biggest signings in its history, Ducati is already looking ahead.
The Italian manufacturer has built its future around Marc Márquez, who recently committed his long-term future to the factory team, while highly rated Pedro Acosta is expected to become the second pillar of Ducati’s next chapter.
The Márquez-Acosta partnership reflects Ducati’s determination to remain the benchmark under the new regulations, combining proven championship-winning experience with one of the brightest young talents in world motorcycle racing.
Bagnaia’s departure undoubtedly closes one of the most successful periods in Ducati’s history, but Borgo Panigale is already preparing for the next evolution of its MotoGP project.
MotoGP’s rider market enters a new era
Bagnaia’s move to Aprilia could become the defining transfer of the 2027 rider market.
Every manufacturer is now reassessing its strategy ahead of MotoGP’s new technical regulations. Honda continues its rebuilding process, Yamaha is accelerating development, KTM remains determined to challenge for championships, and Aprilia has secured one of the biggest names available.
The feeling throughout the paddock is that this announcement may trigger further high-profile moves before the 2027 season officially begins.
Assen marks the beginning of the countdown
Although Bagnaia’s future is now decided, his present remains with Ducati.
The Italian will continue racing in red until the end of the 2026 season, aiming to add more victories before closing one of the most successful chapters in Ducati’s modern history.
From 2027 onwards, however, MotoGP will witness an entirely new rivalry. Francesco Bagnaia will return to the grid wearing Aprilia colours, facing the very team with which he built his legendary status.
