Mugello 2026 Sprint Race: Raúl Fernández conquers Tuscany and writes a historic page

Mugello has always been a land of speed, passion and Italian engines. A circuit that in recent years has often favoured Ducati, turning the Italian Grand Prix into a real celebration for the fans of the Red from Borgo Panigale. This time, however, Saturday's Sprint Race told a different story.

The star of the show was Raúl Fernández, author of an impeccable performance that allowed him to claim the first victory of his career in a MotoGP Sprint. The Spanish rider from the Trackhouse team made the most of a very fast and perfectly balanced Aprilia, setting the pace from the very first stages and leaving his rivals only the role of chasers.

A success that not only represents personal satisfaction, but certifies the definitive growth of the Aprilia project, now capable of winning on any circuit and in any conditions.

Aprilia dominates Saturday at Mugello and launches the World Championship challenge

The signs had already come from qualifying. Marco Bezzecchi had set a record-breaking pole position, breaking the 1'44” barrier and confirming the RS-GP's potential at the Tuscan circuit.

The Sprint Race then turned those feelings into certainties. Fernández took control decisively and never let it go, while Jorge Martín completed a valuable one-two for the Noale manufacturer.

The most significant fact is not just the final result, but the way it came about. Aprilia showed superiority in tyre management, great stability in direction changes and impressive speed on Mugello's long straights, historically a strong point for Ducati.

For the first time in a long time, the Italian crowd watched a race in which the Noale bike appeared to be the technical benchmark for the entire field.

Fernández: the victory of maturity

For Raúl Fernández, the Mugello success represents much more than a simple victory.

The Spaniard had arrived in Tuscany after difficult weeks, marked by mixed results and incidents that had sparked discussion in the paddock. On the Italian circuit, however, he showed the best side of his career.

Precise under braking, aggressive in overtakes and above all impeccable in race management, Fernández built the success without making the slightest mistake. A performance that confirms the talent glimpsed since his Moto2 days and which could represent the definitive turning point in his experience in the premier class.

Jorge Martín thinks about the championship and takes home valuable points

Behind the winner finished Jorge Martín, author of an extremely intelligent Sprint.

The Spanish rider tried to stay in Fernández's slipstream in the early stages of the contest, but quickly understood that the risk of making mistakes would be greater than the benefits of any attack.

The choice was to manage second place, collecting important points in the championship. A strategy that shows maturity and awareness at a crucial moment in the season.

Martín remains in fact one of the main title contenders and the result at Mugello allows him to remain fully involved in the title fight.

Di Giannantonio fires up the Italian crowd

If Aprilia monopolised the first two positions, the podium still had a strong Italian flavour thanks to Fabio Di Giannantonio.

The VR46 team rider confirmed the good signs shown throughout the weekend, taking a third place that is worth much more than a simple podium appearance.

In front of the Mugello fans, Di Giannantonio rode an aggressive but intelligent race, managing to defend against the attacks of those behind him and maintaining a consistent pace until the end.

The impression is that the Roman rider is experiencing the best moment of his MotoGP career. The victory he achieved in recent weeks and the podium secured in Tuscany are proof of a now evident improvement.

Bezzecchi fights back, but the pole remains a missed opportunity

Among the big names in the build-up was Marco Bezzecchi. The World Championship leader started from pole position and was aiming to turn the lap record into a victory in front of the Italian fans.

A difficult start immediately ruined his plans. Forced to chase from the first laps, the Aprilia rider had to spend a lot of energy to recover ground.

The final fourth place tells of a performance that was still positive, but inevitably leaves a sense of missed opportunity. The potential to fight for victory was clear and Sunday's race will be the perfect chance to seek redemption.

Marc Márquez back in the spotlight: the comeback is convincing

Among the most encouraging stories of Mugello Saturday is undoubtedly Marc Márquez's return to top form.

The Spaniard, back after the injury that had forced him to miss the last races, immediately showed surprising competitiveness. In the opening laps he even managed to get into the fight for the leading positions, proving that talent and speed had never been in doubt.

Over the distance he inevitably paid for a physical condition still far from one hundred per cent, but fifth place at the finish represents a very important signal for both Ducati and the championship.

With a Sunday available to further improve his feeling with the bike, Márquez could become one of the most dangerous men in the main race.

MotoGP Mugello 2026 race: everything open for Sunday

The Sprint Race delivered one certainty and many questions.

The certainty is that Aprilia, today, has a bike capable of winning even on the track historically most favourable to Ducati. The questions instead concern Sunday's race, where tyre management, strategy and long-run pace could completely change the balance.

Fernández arrives with the enthusiasm of someone who has just secured the most important success of his career. Martín looks to the championship. Bezzecchi seeks redemption in front of the home crowd. Di Giannantonio dreams of another Italian feat while Márquez wants to complete his return to the top.

All the ingredients are there for a race destined to provide spectacle. And Mugello, once again, is preparing to be the perfect stage.
