Mugello speaks Italian. The first day of the 2026 Italian MotoGP Grand Prix ends with Fabio Di Giannantonio ahead of everyone, the outright star of a Friday that delighted Ducati fans and confirmed the excellent form of the Roman rider.

At the Tuscan circuit, immersed in the warmth of thousands of fans who arrived from the early hours of the morning, Ducati continues to play the role of technical benchmark in the championship. Behind Di Giannantonio is Francesco Bagnaia, just 91 thousandths behind, while Marc Márquez successfully completes his much-anticipated return to competition by securing direct access to Q2.

Di Giannantonio fires up the Mugello and throws down the challenge to the official Ducati team

After the success achieved in Barcelona, Fabio Di Giannantonio continues to live through one of the brightest moments of his career. The Pertamina VR46 Racing Team rider showed speed from FP1, then confirmed it in the decisive afternoon Practice with a lap that nobody was able to improve upon.

More than the lap time, what impresses is the naturalness with which the Roman rider interpreted every phase of the day. Lightning-fast in the time attack, consistent in race pace and always at ease in the fast corners that characterise the Mugello track.

The Italian crowd dreams and he is no longer hiding. The feeling is that number 49 can play a leading role not only in the Sprint Race, but also in Sunday’s long race.

The growth of the VR46 project

Di Giannantonio’s competitiveness also represents confirmation of the work carried out by the VR46 team. The squad founded by Valentino Rossi continues to grow season after season and today has a Desmosedici capable of fighting steadily with the official Ducati bikes.

At the home track, the Tavullia structure seems to have found a particularly effective technical balance, capable of enhancing the Roman rider’s characteristics especially in the more technical sectors of the circuit.

Bagnaia regains confidence: Mugello remains his kingdom

If there is one rider who can look at Friday with optimism, it is Francesco Bagnaia.

The runner-up in the world championship has worked methodically, without necessarily going for the best lap on every outing, but showing consistent competitiveness that suggests a weekend as an outright star.

Mugello has always been one of the Piedmontese rider’s favourite circuits. Here Bagnaia has built some of his most important victories and this year too he seems to have rediscovered those feelings that in some 2026 races had seemed less immediate.

The official Ducati continues to be the benchmark in race pace and this very aspect could prove decisive in the fight for Sunday’s victory.

Ducati still the technical benchmark

The superiority shown by the Borgo Panigale manufacturer emerges above all when looking at the combined standings. Alongside Di Giannantonio and Bagnaia, Enea Bastianini and Franco Morbidelli also feature in the leading positions.

Mugello brings out the qualities of the Desmosedici thanks to the very long main straight and the heavy acceleration required on corner exits. A technical setting that continues to reward the work done by Ducati engineers.

Marc Márquez returns and convinces: mission accomplished on day one

Among the most closely watched protagonists on Friday was inevitably Marc Márquez.

The Spaniard was back on track after his enforced absence caused by the physical problems that had required surgery in recent weeks. On the eve of the weekend he lowered expectations, explaining that he wanted to tackle the weekend cautiously and without setting overly ambitious goals.

The track, however, told a different story.

After an FP1 used mainly to regain confidence with the bike, Márquez progressively increased the pace in the afternoon until finishing inside the top ten. A result that allows him to go directly into Q2 and confirms the successful outcome of the recovery process.

Encouraging signs for the world champion

Beyond the stopwatch, the most important data concerns the physical sensations.

For the first time in several weeks Márquez looked relaxed on the bike, aggressive on the brakes and able to ride without any particular limitations. The small gap to the leaders shows that the world champion could quickly join the fight for the front row already in Saturday’s qualifying.

The Mugello represented a crucial test and the track verdict was decidedly positive.

Bezzecchi, Martin and the outsiders: the world battle heats up

Behind the day’s protagonists, an open battle is shaping up. Marco Bezzecchi, Jorge Martin and Maverick Viñales worked mainly with the race in mind, gathering valuable data for the rest of the weekend.

The feeling is that the fight for pole position could involve at least eight or nine riders, with tiny gaps and very little margin. In such a balanced scenario, every detail could make the difference.

The weather conditions expected on Saturday could also further alter the pecking order, increasing the uncertainty ahead of the Sprint Race.

MotoGP Mugello 2026: Saturday promises spectacle

The first day of the Italian Grand Prix confirmed what many expected: Ducati remains the bike to beat and the Mugello continues to be one of the most spectacular tracks on the entire MotoGP calendar.

Di Giannantonio fired up the enthusiasm of the Italian fans, Bagnaia regained confidence and Marc Márquez showed that he is ready to return as a protagonist. Three different stories intertwined in the unique setting of the Tuscan circuit.

Attention now turns to qualifying and the Sprint Race, two appointments that could begin to outline the definitive shape of a weekend that promises excitement until the very last corner.
