The race: Bagnaia attacks from the off, then Aprilia’s superiority arrives
From the moment the lights go out, Francesco Bagnaia tries to take control of the situation. The Ducati champion knows he cannot wait and immediately sets a fast pace in an attempt to put his rivals under pressure.
For several laps the strategy seems to work. Pecco leads the pack and keeps Bezzecchi and Martin behind him, but as the kilometres pass, Aprilia’s strength becomes clear: tyre management and race pace.
Bezzecchi does not lose his composure. He stays glued to the Ducati number 63, studies every move by his rival and waits for the right moment to strike the decisive attack.
When the overtake comes, the race changes completely.
The World Championship leader immediately increases the pace and starts to build a gap that no one can close any more. Behind him, Martin repeats the same move on Bagnaia and gives Aprilia a superb one-two.
The feeling is that the RS-GP had something extra compared with the opposition throughout the whole weekend, especially in race distance management.
Martin completes the Aprilia celebration
If Bezzecchi is the great star of Sunday, Jorge Martin deserves a special mention.
The Spaniard delivers a race at a very high level, avoiding unnecessary risks and always keeping control of the situation. Once he has passed Bagnaia, Martin manages second place without any particular problems, helping to complete a day that could prove a watershed in the 2026 MotoGP season.
After the race, the Spanish rider pointed out how the work carried out throughout the weekend allowed Aprilia to arrive on Sunday with a particularly competitive bike, especially in the second half of the race.
Bagnaia limits the damage in front of the Ducati fans
For Francesco Bagnaia, third place represents a small personal victory on a difficult day.
After leading the race in the early stages, the Ducati rider gradually found himself in trouble against the pace set by the Aprilias. When Ai Ogura also closed in on the podium, the risk of a sensational exclusion from the top three became real.
Right in the final laps, though, the determination of the Piedmontese champion came to the fore. Bagnaia reacted with pride, defending the podium and scoring important points for the World Championship standings.
At the end of the race, the Ducati rider acknowledged the superiority of his rivals, while nevertheless underlining the progress made during the weekend compared with previous outings.
Ai Ogura surprises again: the rookie comes close to the podium
Among the most positive notes of the Italian Grand Prix is certainly the performance of Ai Ogura.
The Japanese rider continues to amaze in his rookie year and at Mugello comes within touching distance of his first career podium in the premier class. His race is marked by pace, aggression and veteran-like pressure management.
Fourth place at the flag probably leaves a touch of bitterness, but it definitively confirms the huge talent of the Asian rider, who is becoming more and more of a star in modern MotoGP.
Marc Marquez grits his teeth and looks ahead
One of the riders under the spotlight over the weekend was Marc Marquez.
The Spaniard was tackling his first Grand Prix after the recent injury and subsequent operation. His physical condition was not yet ideal, but the Ducati Lenovo rider still completed a solid race to finish in seventh position.
The result still does not reflect the Spanish champion’s ambitions, but it represents an important step forward in the recovery process. The feeling is that in the coming weeks Marquez could gradually return to fighting for the positions that matter.
2026 MotoGP World Championship: Bezzecchi launches the breakaway
The Mugello success is worth much more than twenty-five points.
Marco Bezzecchi leaves the Italian Grand Prix with the awareness that he is the benchmark of the championship. The victory secured in front of the home crowd is a display of strength that could also have important psychological effects.
Aprilia leaves Tuscany with the feeling of having a bike capable of winning on any circuit, while Ducati will have to work to recover ground and respond to what, today, appears to be the main candidate for the world title.
The season is still long, but Mugello may have marked one of the key moments of the 2026 championship.
