The French GP changes the face of the MotoGP World Championship: Aprilia flies, Ducati throws it away
Le Mans delivers a new technical and sporting hierarchy to MotoGP 2026. On the French track came the definitive consecration of Aprilia, the outright star of a perfect weekend capped by Jorge Martin's victory ahead of Marco Bezzecchi. A one-two that weighs on the championship and confirms the impressive growth of the Noale manufacturer, now a stable benchmark for the category.
Behind the Spaniard's success there is a race built with intelligence, pace and impeccable tyre management. Martin let the rivals use up their energy in the first part of the race, then gradually increased his pace until taking control of the GP. Bezzecchi tried to resist, keeping the lead for several laps, but in the final passes the number one Aprilia found something extra, especially in the middle sectors of the circuit.
For Ducati, however, the French Grand Prix turns into a missed opportunity. Francesco Bagnaia, after showing encouraging signs in qualifying and warm up, crashed at the decisive moment of the race, leaving the way clear for his rivals in the battle for the world title.
Jorge Martin perfect at Le Mans: management, speed and champion mentality
Martin's victory comes not only from outright speed, but from the maturity with which he interpreted every phase of the race. The Spaniard avoided forcing the pace in the first laps, staying close to the leaders without compromising tyre performance. When the GP entered the decisive phase, the Aprilia rider began hammering out a series of fastest laps that progressively put Bezzecchi under pressure.
The decisive overtake came in the final part of the race, taking advantage of Aprilia's greater stability under the heaviest braking. From that moment Martin imposed a pace impossible for the rivals to match, controlling things without a mistake until the chequered flag.
In the post-race interview, the Spanish rider highlighted the competitiveness of the RS-GP, especially in managing rear degradation, underlining how the work done by the team in recent weeks allowed the bike to become extremely effective over the long distance.
Aprilia increasingly the technical benchmark of MotoGP
The Le Mans result is not an isolated episode. Aprilia showed superiority in every area of the weekend: single-lap speed, race pace and electronics management. The Italian bike proved particularly effective in acceleration out of slow corners, one of the most delicate points of the French circuit.
Bezzecchi also confirmed the growth of the project, bringing home a fundamental second place for the championship. The Italian led the race for several laps, showing aggression and consistency, before having to yield to the final push from his team-mate.
The podium completed by Ai Ogura also certifies the technical depth of the Aprilia package, capable of completely monopolising the top three on one of the most demanding tracks in the calendar.
Bagnaia, costly crash: Ducati loses ground in the World Championship
The French race instead leaves a great deal of bitterness in the Ducati pits. Bagnaia had started with the aim of relaunching his title ambitions after a mixed start to the season. The pole position and the good pace shown in practice had sparked optimism inside the official team.
In the race, however, the Italian champion was unable to find consistency in the middle phase of the race. After staying attached to the front group, the Ducati rider slid off while trying to make up ground on Martin and Bezzecchi.
A crash that weighs not only in terms of points, but also psychologically. Ducati continues to be competitive on the single lap, but compared with Aprilia it appears less effective in managing pace and rear tyre wear.
Ducati's difficulties between speed and consistency
At Le Mans a major difference between the two technical projects emerged clearly. Ducati retains extraordinary effectiveness in qualifying and under the most aggressive braking, but over race distance Aprilia showed greater fluidity.
Bagnaia, in his weekend comments, had spoken of important progress in front-end feeling thanks to the latest aerodynamic updates. However, in the race the Desmosedici suffered a drop in performance especially in the traction phases, forcing the Italian rider to push beyond the limit.
Marquez stopped by injuries: the French GP complicates everything
The French weekend also turned into a nightmare for Marc Marquez. The Spaniard, author of a very fast Saturday with a track record, was forced to miss the race after the violent crash in the Sprint Race.
The examinations highlighted new physical problems that risk further compromising his season. A delicate situation for Ducati, which had counted on the experience and speed of the eight-time world champion to bring stability back to the MotoGP project.
Marquez's absence also deprives the championship of one of the most eagerly awaited protagonists in the fight at the top, just when Aprilia seems to have found its definitive dimension.
MotoGP 2026 standings: Martin relaunches the title race
With his Le Mans success, Jorge Martin sends a very strong signal to the championship. The Spaniard confirms that he is now one of the most complete riders on the grid, capable of combining speed, aggression and strategic management.
Aprilia leaves the French GP with the feeling that it finally has the most balanced bike in MotoGP 2026 in its hands. Ducati remains an absolute benchmark, but now it will have to react quickly to avoid the World Championship taking the direction of Noale for good.
Le Mans, meanwhile, has already left a clear message to the paddock: the title fight is more open than ever, but today the benchmark is called Aprilia.
