Le Mans opens the weekend with a surprise: Luca Marini out in front

The first real snapshot of the 2026 French Grand Prix delivers an image that until a few months ago would have seemed unthinkable: a Honda ahead of everyone. The man to set the best time in FP1 at Le Mans was Luca Marini, author of a 1:30.857 that immediately lit up the MotoGP paddock and relaunched the ambitions of the Japanese manufacturer.

At the Bugatti circuit, a track historically technical and demanding, especially under braking, the RC213V showed a new, concrete level of competitiveness, above all in front-end management and through the slow corners. Marini looked effective straight away in direction changes and consistent in the pace, confirming growth already visible in the latest rounds of the season.

The mood in the Honda pits has changed. The development work carried out in recent weeks finally seems to have delivered important answers, and the Italian rider has been able to make the most of a bike that is more stable and less nervous than in the first part of the season.

Pedro Acosta confirms KTM's progress

Behind Marini, Pedro Acosta once again slotted in, now a regular presence in the upper reaches of the standings. The Spaniard continues to impress with his maturity and speed, confirming the step forward made by KTM over the course of the championship.

At Le Mans the RC16 proved particularly effective on acceleration, with Acosta able to interpret the French track conditions to perfection. The young Spanish talent worked especially on race pace, but on a flying lap he also looked immediately competitive.

In the paddock, the feeling is growing that KTM has now closed most of the gap to Ducati. The new aerodynamic solutions introduced recently are offering greater stability under braking and better management of corner exit, key elements on a track like Le Mans.

Zarco delights the French crowd: Honda also in the spotlight with LCR

The Frenchman finds his feeling again with the Bugatti Circuit

Johann Zarco’s third place definitively confirms Honda’s good form. In front of his home crowd, the LCR rider immediately found confidence again with the French track, making the most of his experience and a bike that is finally more competitive.

Zarco, already a protagonist at Le Mans in recent seasons, showed an excellent balance, especially in the more technical sectors, the ones where Honda had previously struggled most compared with the European rivals.

The Frenchman worked without pushing too hard on the time attack, a detail that makes his result even more significant ahead of pre-qualifying.

Is Ducati hiding its true potential? Bagnaia and Marquez remain far back

Complicated morning for Pecco: feeling to rediscover

If Honda and KTM are smiling, Ducati is watching closely but without any particular alarm. Marc Marquez ended FP1 in ninth place, focusing mainly on race pace and data gathering ahead of the afternoon.

The session was more difficult for Francesco Bagnaia, only eighteenth at the end of a tough morning. The two-time world champion struggled above all in the corner-entry phase, complaining of little confidence at the front and a bike less precise than expected.

In the Ducati pits, however, there is calm. The track conditions, still very cold in the early hours of the morning, affected the behaviour of the Desmosedici, traditionally more effective with more grip.

Marquez, although not really going for the final fastest lap, still showed interesting signs on the pace, remaining among the most consistent in the race simulation.

Fabio Di Giannantonio impresses: the race pace is frightening

VR46 keeps growing: Di Giannantonio among the most solid on track

Among the most convincing protagonists of FP1 is certainly Fabio Di Giannantonio. The VR46 rider finished in the top positions while working almost exclusively with used tyres, a detail considered extremely significant in the paddock.

The Roman impressed above all with the consistency of his times, maintaining a very competitive pace even in the final part of the session. An intelligent approach to the work that suggests a very interesting potential, especially with an eye on the Sprint Race.

The feeling is that the VR46 team is going through one of the strongest phases of its technical growth. The bike looks balanced and the riders are now able to make continuous use of the Ducati package even on the most technical circuits.

Aprilia works in silence: Bezzecchi does not show his cards

The championship leader focuses on fine-tuning

A more cautious morning for Aprilia, instead. Marco Bezzecchi finished far from the top positions, but without really going for the time. The championship leader focused much of the work on race setup, carrying out several setup and electronics tests.

Jorge Martin followed a similar programme too, preferring to collect data rather than immediately showing his hand on a flying lap.

In the Aprilia pits, the belief remains that there is significant margin, especially on the long run. The RS-GP continues to look very competitive in the cornering phases, an element that could become decisive over the course of the French weekend.

MotoGP Le Mans 2026: pre-qualifying is already decisive

The feeling after FP1 is that the Le Mans weekend could become one of the most balanced of the season. Honda has sent a strong signal, KTM confirms that it is now firmly in the fight at the front and Ducati, while remaining under wraps, will have to react quickly to avoid complications for qualifying.

This afternoon's pre-qualifying will carry enormous weight in the weekend's overall picture. Going straight through to Q2 will mean avoiding risks and traffic on Saturday, especially at a track where starting at the front can make the difference.

With temperatures constantly changing and the risk of rain ready to shuffle everything, Le Mans is once again preparing to become the perfect ground for surprises, strategies and twists.
