A crazy Catalan GP: crashes, red flags and a race at the limit

The 2026 Catalan Grand Prix delivered one of the most dramatic and unpredictable Sundays of modern MotoGP. At Montmeló, the final result almost took a back seat to a race split by violent crashes, red flags and constant twists and turns that turned the Catalan circuit into a true test of psychological endurance.

In the end, Fabio Di Giannantonio took the win, putting in a top-class performance with the Ducati VR46, but the Spanish weekend will be remembered above all for the tense atmosphere in the paddock after the very hard crashes involving Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco.

The race immediately turned into a puzzle. The first stoppage came after the dramatic impact between Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta’s KTM, which had suddenly slowed because of a technical problem on the main straight. The Spanish rider from the Gresini team had no time to avoid the contact and the scene immediately froze the circuit.

After a long suspension, the second start created fresh chaos when Johann Zarco lost control of his Honda, involving Bagnaia and Marini in a violent chain reaction. At that point race control stopped everything again, completely redrawing strategies and race management.

Perfect Di Giannantonio: a win from a true leader

Di Giannantonio rating 10

Fabio Di Giannantonio put in the perfect Grand Prix at the most difficult possible moment. In the middle of the general chaos, the Roman VR46 rider was the clearest-thinking of them all. After avoiding the bikes involved in the early incidents by centimetres, he kept his cool and concentration, reading the race better than his rivals.

In the decisive phase of the GP, the Ducati rider showed impeccable tyre management and consistent speed, which allowed him to attack at the right moment. The feeling is that Di Giannantonio has made another mental step forward, definitively turning into a rider for big victories.

After the race, he spoke about the tension experienced during the first crash, explaining that he had mainly thought about avoiding the worst. An image that shows how extreme the Catalan Sunday was.

Aldeguer impresses again, Bagnaia saves the weekend

Aldeguer rating 8.5

Fermin Aldeguer continues to impress. In a race where experience and composure mattered more than pure speed, the Spanish rookie showed surprising maturity. Always clean, aggressive when needed but never beyond the limit, the Ducati rider built a deserved podium that confirms his outstanding potential.

His progress is becoming one of the most interesting themes of the season.

Bagnaia rating 7.5

Francesco Bagnaia leaves Catalonia with a podium that is worth much more than the standings suggest. The Ducati world champion was involved in the chaos of the second start but still managed to stay clear-headed in a psychologically very difficult race.

He did not have the pace to win, but he managed every situation intelligently, avoiding costly mistakes. The third place at the end, also thanks to the penalty handed to Joan Mir, is a crucial result for morale and for the World Championship standings.

Mir sharp but penalised, Bezzecchi solid

Mir rating 8

For long stretches Joan Mir had been savouring a return to the podium with a finally competitive Honda. The Spanish rider probably delivered the best race of his season, riding with aggression and consistency.

The penalty for irregular tyre pressure, however, took away a result that seemed all but certain. Even so, it remains a performance that relaunches Honda’s ambitions and restores confidence to a rider who had endured too many difficulties in recent seasons.

Bezzecchi rating 7

Marco Bezzecchi approached the race with pragmatism. Without the pace of the best, the Aprilia rider preferred to avoid unnecessary risks, collecting valuable points on a Sunday where finishing the race was already a minor masterpiece.

The fourth place at the end matters above all in championship terms and confirms the growing solidity of the Aprilia project.

Acosta very fast but unlucky, Martin wastes everything

Acosta rating 6.5

Pedro Acosta had started the weekend showing impressive pace, but the technical problem that caused the contact with Alex Marquez completely changed his GP.

From that moment on, the KTM talent looked less calm and more nervous than usual. The speed remains beyond question, but Catalonia leaves him mainly with frustration and a huge scare.

Martin rating 4.5

Jorge Martin leaves Montmeló with zero certainties and plenty of regrets. The Spanish rider never managed to find consistency and in the decisive phase of the race he ruined everything with an avoidable crash.

On a day that required management and composure, the Aprilia rider instead pushed too hard, paying a very heavy price in World Championship terms.

Zarco and Alex Marquez, beyond the result safety matters

Zarco rating 4

The mistake at the second start had enormous consequences and helped fuel the chaos of an already very tense Sunday. The Frenchman was immediately treated and taken away for checks, while concern over his condition grew in the paddock.

Alex Marquez no rating

His GP lasted a few seconds but the image of the crash will remain among the strongest of the season. After the impact with Acosta’s KTM, which had slowed down, the Gresini rider remained on the ground for a long time before the medics arrived.

The first news coming from the medical centre reassured the paddock, but the Catalan Grand Prix inevitably reopens the debate on safety and on the ever-more extreme conditions of modern MotoGP.

MotoGP 2026, Montmeló leaves its mark on the World Championship fight

The Catalan GP changes the emotional balance of the championship. Di Giannantonio leaves strengthened by a hugely significant victory, Bagnaia limits the damage and Bezzecchi gains ground on a hugely difficult day for many of the main players.

But beyond the standings, Montmeló leaves above all images destined to remain in the paddock’s memory. A spectacular, very hard race on the limit, which once again reminded everyone how thin the line is between absolute speed and danger in MotoGP.
