Barcelona lights up MotoGP: Ducati and Aprilia separated by just a few thousandths

The Catalan Grand Prix gets underway immediately and the first day of track action gives a very clear picture of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship: total balance, rising tension and a title fight that promises sparks right down to the season’s last corner.

At the Montmeló circuit it is Alex Márquez who sets the fastest time in FP1, confirming Ducati’s competitiveness on a track that is traditionally very technical and delicate when it comes to tyre management. Behind him Jorge Martin and Fabio Di Giannantonio complete the standings, which perfectly reflects the category’s current moment: tiny gaps and values still all to be defined.

But beyond the stopwatch, what stands out above all is the atmosphere in the paddock. The feeling is that Barcelona could represent an important turning point in the season, especially for the ever more intense battle between Aprilia and Ducati.

Alex Márquez tops the timesheets for Ducati: “The bike is competitive, we can stay in front”

The Gresini rider starts strongly in his home weekend

In front of the Spanish crowd, Alex Márquez immediately set his own pace. The Gresini team rider looked effective both in the time attack and in race pace work, making the most of a Desmosedici that was very stable in direction changes and particularly effective in the central sector of the Catalan track.

In the Ducati pits there is a different kind of confidence compared with the last outings. After some difficult weekends, the Borgo Panigale manufacturer is looking for important answers precisely on a track where Aprilia seems able to express all its technical potential.

Alex Márquez, at the end of the session, spoke of positive sensations from the very first laps, underlining how the work done on the bike’s balance had given him more confidence, especially on corner entry. An essential aspect on a circuit where corner speed and front-end management become decisive.

Marc’s absence changes Ducati’s balance

The other big story of the weekend, however, remains Marc Márquez’s absence. The Spanish champion is not in Barcelona after the injury sustained in the French GP, a situation that forces Ducati to redefine hierarchies and strategies at a very delicate stage of the season.

Without the reference factory rider, the technical and media weight of the Emilian manufacturer inevitably shifts onto riders such as Alex Márquez and Di Giannantonio, who are now called upon to keep the Desmosedici’s world championship challenge alive.

Jorge Martin fires up Aprilia: “We’ve found consistency”

The world champion regains confidence after Le Mans

On the other side of the Aprilia pits, Jorge Martin arrives in Catalonia with a completely different conviction compared with a few weeks ago. The win at Le Mans has brought back enthusiasm and confidence to the world champion, who now sees the possibility of reopening the title fight in concrete terms.

Martin ended FP1 in the very top positions, once again showing very competitive pace. Even in the long runs, the RS-GP looked particularly effective in managing the rear tyre, one of the aspects that could make the difference in Sunday’s long race.

The Spanish rider spoke of a bike that has grown a lot in recent weeks, especially in terms of braking stability and traction on corner exit. Elements that become fundamental on a track like Barcelona.

Aprilia is now truly dreaming of the MotoGP World Championship

The most interesting aspect concerns, however, the maturity achieved by the Aprilia project. The Noale manufacturer is no longer just an alternative to Ducati: today it appears a credible contender for the world title both among riders and constructors.

The technical growth of the RS-GP is evident and the work carried out over the winter seems to have finally brought the Italian bike to a constant level of competitiveness on every track.

Marco Bezzecchi championship leader: race management and composure are his weapons

The Italian rider is focusing on consistency

If Martin represents pure speed, Marco Bezzecchi continues instead to build his World Championship through extremely intelligent management of race weekends.

At Barcelona the championship leader preferred not to push too hard in FP1, focusing above all on race pace work and tyre choice. A strategy that is now familiar for the rider from Romagna, who this season has shown greater maturity than in the past.

Bezzecchi knows perfectly well that the Catalan GP could become a crucial race in the title fight. For this reason his approach remains cautious but extremely concrete.

The internal Aprilia battle could decide the title

With Martin improving and Bezzecchi still leading the World Championship, Aprilia now finds itself in the most delicate and fascinating situation possible: managing two riders capable of winning the championship.

For now the atmosphere in the pits appears calm, but as the races go by the pressure is bound to increase. And it is precisely this internal balance that could determine much of the 2026 MotoGP season.

Di Giannantonio and Acosta ready to join the fight

Keep an eye on the Catalan weekend outsiders

Among the protagonists of the first day, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Pedro Acosta also stand out. The Roman rider from the VR46 team continues to enjoy one of the best periods of his career and in Barcelona immediately showed great speed.

Pedro Acosta’s start was also very positive, increasingly a technical reference within KTM. The Spaniard confirmed very high potential especially in the third sector of the circuit, where the RC16 seems particularly effective.

Both could become decisive variables both in the Sprint Race and in Sunday’s long race.

MotoGP today: qualifying and Sprint decisive for the Catalan GP

Montmeló prepares for a weekend of very high tension

The feeling after FP1 is that the Catalan GP could deliver one of the most spectacular weekends of the entire 2026 MotoGP season. The tiny gaps, the technical balance and the state of the championship standings make every session potentially decisive.

Alex Márquez fired the first strong signal, but Martin and Bezzecchi seem to have the pace to respond immediately. Behind them Ducati, Aprilia and KTM continue an ever tighter technical battle.

And in Barcelona, where tyre degradation often decides the outcome of races, even the smallest detail could become the key to winning the Grand Prix.
