The Honda LCR rider will have to wait weeks before the operation: “I should not have set off again”

MotoGP is holding its breath for Johann Zarco. The French Honda LCR rider came out badly injured from the dramatic crash that took place at the Catalan Grand Prix, one of the most harrowing images of the 2026 season. After specialist checks carried out in France, it was confirmed that number 5 will have to face a long recovery period, with the knee operation unable to be performed immediately.

News that further complicates the Frenchman’s medical situation and could bring his season to an early end. In the paddock, meanwhile, the shock remains very much alive over what happened at the first corner after the second restart of the Barcelona race.

Johann Zarco’s condition after the MotoGP crash

Multiple knee injuries and a broken leg

The tests carried out in Lyon by Professor Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, one of Europe’s leading knee specialists, revealed significant damage to the left knee joint. Zarco suffered ruptured anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, an injury to the medial meniscus and a broken fibula in the ankle area.

The French rider will have to wait several weeks before undergoing surgery. Doctors have decided to postpone the operation to allow the knee to fully deflate and reduce the risk of post-operative complications.

A cautious but unavoidable choice, considering the violence of the impact and the condition of the joint.

Zarco’s shocking account: “It was terrifying”

His leg trapped in Bagnaia’s Ducati

What made the affair even more striking was the account from Zarco himself, who in the hours after the race described in detail those dramatic seconds spent in the gravel at Montmeló.

The Frenchman explained that he found himself with no possibility of control after the contact triggered under braking at the first corner. His left leg remained trapped in Francesco Bagnaia’s Ducati while the bikes slid at high speed towards the outside of the track.

The Honda rider admitted that he felt genuine fear, speaking of one of the most violent crashes of his career. Zarco said he immediately sensed that something was wrong with the knee, while the pain increased second by second.

The backstory before the restart

“Mentally I was no longer clear-headed”

What is most thought-provoking, however, is what happened before the second start. Zarco revealed that he was already in pain after the previous crash that had taken place in the first part of the race, when some debris had hit his left leg.

According to the Frenchman, that blow had already affected his sensitivity and concentration. As the hours passed, the rider openly admitted that he regretted choosing to restart, confessing that he did not feel fully clear-headed at that moment.

Words that immediately reignited the debate over the management of restarts in MotoGP and the physical and mental condition of riders after high-intensity crashes.

MotoGP under scrutiny after the Barcelona chaos

Safety and restarts at the centre of the debate

The GP of Catalonia left heavy consequences in the paddock. In addition to Zarco’s crash, the race was marked by numerous contacts and crashes that fuelled new controversy over safety.

Many insiders believe that restarts are now one of the most critical moments in modern MotoGP. With the pack tightly bunched and tyres still cold, the risk of multiple incidents increases exponentially.

The images of Francesco Bagnaia and Luca Marini rushing towards Zarco immediately after the crash conveyed the seriousness of what had happened. For some endless seconds, the paddock feared the worst.

When will Zarco return in MotoGP?

Long recovery and still uncertain timing

At the moment it is impossible to say when Johann Zarco will be able to get back on his Honda LCR. Everything will depend on the outcome of the operation and, above all, on the time needed to regain stability and strength in the left knee.

Cruciate ligament injuries normally require months of rehabilitation, especially for a MotoGP rider who has to withstand extreme physical loads under braking and in direction changes.

The feeling is that the Frenchman will remain away from the track for much of the season. Right now the priority is not a return, but a full recovery after one of the most shocking crashes of the last MotoGP championship.
