Ducati tests the MotoGP 850 prototype for 2027 at Misano: less extreme aerodynamics, new rules and the challenge already open with KTM, Honda and Yamaha.
Ducati lights up the future at Misano
In the paddock at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the future of MotoGP has already taken shape. Ducati has put the first 850cc prototype destined for the 2027 regulatory revolution on track.
This is a technical shakedown, entrusted to test rider Michele Pirro, with the aim of checking the foundations of the project: engine, chassis and electronics. But the leaked images tell much more.
Ducati 850: features and first impressions
The prototype seen at Misano already introduces several key elements of the new MotoGP regulations:
850 cc engine (reduction from the current 1000 cc)
Introduction of Pirelli tyres from 2027
Removal of the ride-height devices (holeshot device)
Reduced but evolved aerodynamics
More compact and cleaner lines
The result is a bike that is visually more “simple”, but technically anything but less sophisticated.
Aerodynamics: everything changes, but it does not disappear
One of the most discussed topics concerns aerodynamics itself. The Ducati prototype makes one point clear straight away:
aerodynamics is not being eliminated, but transformed
The outer wings are less intrusive, while more work is being done on the surfaces integrated into the fairing. A solution aimed at:
complying with the new regulatory limits
maintaining stability and performance
reducing the negative effects in the slipstream
It is a change of philosophy: fewer visible appendages, more hidden engineering.
MotoGP 2027: a revolution already under way
Ducati is not the only one on the move:
KTM → first to put the 850 on track
Honda and Yamaha → already at an advanced stage of development
Aprilia → expected to debut in the next tests
The next test will be at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, where the first collective outing of the prototypes is expected.
The protagonists of Ducati development
Alongside Michele Pirro, Ducati is also banking on Nicolò Bulega, a key figure thanks to his experience with Pirelli tyres in Superbike.
A non-trivial detail: with the change of tyre supplier, know-how becomes an enormous competitive advantage.
Analysis: Ducati sends a clear message
The debut of the 850 at Misano has a precise meaning:
Ducati is already projected towards 2027
Aerodynamics remains central, even if different
The competition among constructors has already begun in earnest
It is not just a test. It is a declaration of intent.
