The Catalan GP reignites the debate over the relationship between Bagnaia and Ducati

The Catalan Grand Prix weekend did not only spark the battle on track. What has set the MotoGP paddock talking above all have been Valentino Rossi’s statements about the situation Francesco Bagnaia is going through and the internal situation at Ducati. Words that have inevitably shone a light on one of the most delicate topics of the season: the relationship between Pecco and the team of the Borgo Panigale manufacturer.

The nine-time world champion, closely following the difficulties his pupil has been going through, had made it clear that Bagnaia was tackling the season with a huge effort, while at the same time stressing the need to see a Ducati even closer to its leading rider.

A reflection that quickly went around the paddock, fuelling the rumours already circulating for weeks about a less serene atmosphere than in the years of the world titles.

Bagnaia’s reply: “Ducati is working very hard”

Francesco Bagnaia chose to respond without raising the tone, but with a very clear message. The rider from Piedmont openly defended the team’s work, explaining how from the outside it is difficult to perceive everything that happens daily inside the Ducati pits.

According to Bagnaia, the team is working intensely to solve the problems that emerged over the course of the season and rediscover that technical balance that had allowed the Desmosedici to dominate in recent years. Pecco reiterated that he feels the team’s support, stressing that the project continues to believe in his abilities despite the difficulties.

Behind his words, however, an inevitably more complex picture emerges. The feeling with the bike has still not returned to the levels of the winning seasons and, race after race, the Italian rider continues to chase that consistency which in the past was his strength.

Ducati between technical pressure and new balances

The MotoGP 2026 season is putting Ducati before a challenge different from the recent past. After years of technical and sporting dominance, the factory team now finds itself having to deal with a more delicate situation, both from the point of view of bike development and on the internal balance front.

Marc Márquez’s arrival within the Ducati project has inevitably changed the scenario in the red garage. The Spaniard’s presence has increased internal competitiveness and brought further pressure on Bagnaia, who until a short time ago represented the team’s absolute benchmark.

There is a feeling in the paddock that Ducati is going through a transitional phase, in which every technical and human detail carries enormous weight. Bagnaia continues to be central to the project, but at the same time he must coexist with internal competition that has never been so strong.

Valentino Rossi defends his pupil

Valentino Rossi’s words were interpreted by many as a stance in defence of his rider. The bond between the Doctor and Bagnaia goes well beyond a professional relationship: Pecco grew up within the VR46 Academy and has always been considered one of the symbolic riders of the project wanted by Rossi.

For this reason, his intervention had an even greater impact within the MotoGP paddock. Rossi wanted above all to stress the human side of the situation, recalling how much Bagnaia is trying to react in a moment that is complicated from a technical and mental point of view.

The topic inevitably also ties in with the expectations created around Ducati in recent years. After dominating the World Championship, today every difficulty is magnified and every statement takes on a deeper meaning.

Bagnaia’s moment between difficulties and the search for consistency

The Catalan GP also confirmed an obvious fact: Bagnaia has still not managed to rediscover the perfect feeling with his Ducati. The difficulties on corner entry and the management of the front continue to limit the performance of the Italian champion, often forced to chase during the weekend.

Even so, Pecco continues to appear lucid in his analysis and determined in his work with the team. The podium achieved after a complicated weekend represents an important sign, but the gap to the main rivals shows that there is still a lot of work to do.

The feeling is that the second part of the season could become decisive not only for the world standings, but also for redefining the internal balance at Ducati.

Bagnaia and Ducati seek the breakthrough

The media debate sparked by Valentino Rossi’s words and Francesco Bagnaia’s response perfectly captures the moment being lived by the team of the Borgo Panigale manufacturer. On one side there is the desire to protect its leading rider, on the other the need to quickly rebuild technical calm and competitiveness.

Bagnaia continues to publicly defend Ducati and to reiterate his trust in the project. At the same time, however, the paddock is watching every signal coming from the red garage with attention, aware that the MotoGP 2026 World Championship could turn out to be one of the most delicate championships of recent years for the Italian manufacturer.

The feeling is that the next races could become decisive in understanding whether Ducati will really manage to rediscover that balance which had turned Bagnaia into the dominator of MotoGP.
