A scorching finish at the French GP: the KTM rider loses fourth place at the final corner and ignites the rivalry with the Roman VR46 rider

The 2026 MotoGP French Grand Prix delivered one of the most intense and debated finishes of the entire season. At the Le Mans circuit, Pedro Acosta and Fabio Di Giannantonio were the protagonists of a hard duel in the closing laps, culminating in the decisive overtake by the VR46 rider at the expense of the Spanish KTM rider in the final metres of the race.

A spectacular, aggressive but fair battle, which immediately lit up the paddock and fuelled tensions set to continue at the next World Championship rounds too. Because if Di Giannantonio celebrated a fourth place built with patience and composure, Acosta left France angry and with the feeling of having lost far more than a position.

Acosta competitive throughout the race, then the collapse at the end

For much of the race Pedro Acosta had shown the pace of a true frontrunner. The Spanish KTM talent had managed to stay consistently in the leading group thanks to an aggressive but controlled approach, exploiting the competitiveness of the RC16 especially under braking and in direction changes.

The strategy chosen by the Austrian team called for a conservative management of the front tyre, with a hard compound intended to guarantee stability in the second half of the race. A technical solution that initially had allowed Acosta to maintain a strong pace without excessive performance drops.

As the laps went by, however, the wear on the front tyre began to limit the KTM’s precision on corner entry. And it was հենց then that Fabio Di Giannantonio increased the pace, gradually closing on the Spanish rider until direct contact in the final corners.

Acosta’s jibe: “No one overtakes me while looking at me”

The overtake by the VR46 rider was not taken calmly by the KTM rookie. After the race, Acosta made comments that immediately sparked debate in the MotoGP paddock.

The KTM rider’s words after the race

Visibly irritated by the result slipping away on the last lap, Acosta commented on the episode with a phrase destined to spark discussion:

“I’ll remember Di Giannantonio. No one overtakes me looking at me.”

Words that perfectly capture the character of the Spanish rider, increasingly a protagonist on and off the track. Acosta did not hide his displeasure at an overtake he considers extremely aggressive, while implicitly acknowledging the determination shown by the Italian rival.

During the subsequent interviews, the KTM rider explained how the bike had become more difficult to manage in the final stages, especially in the fast direction changes and hard braking zones of the Bugatti circuit.

Di Giannantonio perfect at the end: the Ducati VR46 grows again

On the other side of the pits, Fabio Di Giannantonio instead analysed a race built on tactical intelligence and management with satisfaction. The Roman rider chose not to push in the early stages, focusing above all on preserving the rear tyre and optimising the pace in the second half of the race.

The strategy paid off at the end, when the Ducati Desmosedici of the VR46 team began to show a higher level of stability than Acosta’s KTM.

The decisive overtake in the final sector

Di Giannantonio prepared the overtake lap after lap, exploiting the Ducati’s greater traction on corner exit and braking precision. The final attack came at exactly the right moment, with a clean but extremely determined move that allowed him to take fourth place.

The Roman rider then underlined how the work done by the team on electronic management and tyre degradation represented one of the decisive aspects of the French weekend.

For the VR46 rider, this is an important result not only in terms of the standings, but also to confirm the steady progress shown in the first part of the 2026 MotoGP season.

KTM on the rise, but Acosta already demands champion-level results

Despite the bitter ending, the Le Mans weekend confirms KTM’s path of growth. The RC16 looked competitive for much of the weekend and Acosta continues to impress with speed, adaptation and personality.

The Spanish rider, however, already has the attitude of someone who wants to fight consistently for podiums and wins. At Le Mans he once again showed that he can be in the group of the best, but also how fine the line is between a great race and a frustrating finish in an increasingly close MotoGP.

MotoGP 2026 increasingly intense: a new rivalry is born

The duel between Pedro Acosta and Fabio Di Giannantonio is one of the most interesting themes to emerge from the French Grand Prix. Two young, aggressive and hungry riders, united by the desire to carve out an increasingly important space in the fight at the top of the World Championship.

Le Mans left strong images, heavy statements and the feeling that this rivalry could become one of the hottest elements of the MotoGP 2026 season.

In a championship where Ducati continues to be the technical benchmark, KTM is growing quickly and Aprilia confirms its competitiveness, every overtake can turn into a message. And the one sent at Le Mans by Di Giannantonio and Acosta seems only the beginning of a battle destined to continue.
