The ratings for the Montréal weekend, between those who impressed, those who failed and the surprises

The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix delivered one of the most intense weekends of the season. Montréal confirms Mercedes' technical superiority, establishes Andrea Kimi Antonelli as the face of the world championship and restores confidence to Ferrari thanks to Lewis Hamilton's best result of the season.

Between perfect strategies, costly mistakes and internal tensions, the Gilles Villeneuve circuit provides important pointers ahead of the next races. Here are the full Formula 1 ratings for the Canadian weekend.

GP Canada 2026 ratings

Andrea Kimi Antonelli – 10

Absolute dominator of the world championship

A fourth consecutive victory and an increasingly solid world championship lead. In Montréal, the Mercedes driver once again shows impressive maturity in managing the race and the pressure. After Russell's retirement he makes no mistakes, controls the pace and manages tyres and strategy perfectly.

The feeling is that we are looking at a driver who is already complete. Speed, composure and consistency are making the difference in a championship that now sees him as the clear reference.

Lewis Hamilton – 8,5

Ferrari finally competitive in the race

The Canadian weekend probably represents Hamilton's best moment of the season since he started wearing Ferrari colours. In the race, the British driver is aggressive, precise and very effective in tyre management.

The overtake on Verstappen is one of the best moments of the race and second place restores enthusiasm to a Ferrari that continues to struggle in qualifying but is finally showing encouraging signs on race pace.

Max Verstappen – 7,5

Limits the damage with experience

Red Bull is no longer dominant and Verstappen is often forced to race defensively. Even in Montréal, the world champion tries to stay close to the Mercedes, but the technical gap becomes clear, especially in the second half of the race.

The podium is still an important result considering the difficulties of the RB22. He maximises the available potential without making mistakes.

George Russell – 7

Excellent weekend ruined by retirement

Up until the technical problem, he was driving a practically perfect race. pole position, excellent start and authoritative management of the pace. The retirement for a power unit failure denies him a possible victory and leaves huge bitterness.

The tension with Antonelli, however, is growing race after race and Mercedes will soon have to start managing an increasingly heated rivalry.

Charles Leclerc – 5,5

Still too nervous

A complicated weekend for the Monegasque. Ferrari is improving with Hamilton while he continues to struggle, especially in finding confidence with the balance of the car.

In the race he stays far from the battle for the podium and on the radio he often sounds frustrated. Montréal confirms a delicate moment that risks affecting morale as well.

Oscar Piastri – 6

McLaren wastes a good chance

McLaren had shown interesting speed in free practice, but in the race it lacks consistency. Piastri tries to stay with the leading group but never really manages to get into the fight for the podium.

A satisfactory weekend, but with the feeling that less was collected than the potential available.

Lando Norris – 5

Too many mistakes at key moments

He starts well but gradually loses competitiveness as the laps go by. Tyre management is not convincing and some errors definitively compromise the race.

From a driver of his talent, greater consistency is expected in decisive weekends.

Fernando Alonso – 7

Always concrete and intelligent

Aston Martin does not have the pace of the top teams, but Alonso continues to build results by using experience and strategy. Once again he brings home important points without mistakes.

Impeccable race management, especially in the mixed conditions seen in Montréal.

Carlos Sainz – 6,5

Williams surprisingly competitive

A good race from the Spaniard, who makes good use of the opportunities offered by the neutralisations and brings Williams into the top ten.

An orderly weekend without any blemishes.

Sergio Perez – 5

Still far from Verstappen

The internal comparison with Verstappen continues to be harsh. Perez struggles both in qualifying and on race pace and never really manages to make an impact in the race.

For Red Bull it becomes increasingly urgent to rediscover competitiveness even with the second car.

Mercedes rating 9

The best car in Formula 1

In Montréal, Mercedes' superiority is evident in every condition. Tyre management, straight-line speed and behaviour in slow corners make the W17 the reference car in the championship.

The only negative note is Russell's technical problem and an internal rivalry that could soon become difficult to control.

Ferrari rating 7,5

Concrete signs of improvement

Hamilton's podium restores enthusiasm to Maranello. Ferrari seems finally to have found a more stable operating window, especially on race pace.

There are still problems on the single lap and a certain inconsistency with Leclerc, but Montréal still represents an important step forward.

Red Bull rating 6

Verstappen salvages a difficult weekend

The world champion's podium avoids a negative outcome, but the feeling is that Red Bull has lost the technical advantage accumulated in recent seasons.

An immediate reaction is needed to stay attached to the world championship battle against a Mercedes that is currently superior.
