Russell wins at the Red Bull Ring ahead of Verstappen and Antonelli. Ferrari pays for an ineffective strategy and loses ground in a weekend that seemed to promise a lot.

The 2026 Austrian Grand Prix gives George Russell a big boost in the fight for the world title. At the Red Bull Ring, the Mercedes driver took a victory of great maturity, holding off Max Verstappen and team-mate Kimi Antonelli until the very end in a race held in extreme temperatures, to the point of being classified as “Heat Hazard” by the FIA.

For Mercedes it is the seventh success in the first eight races of the season, a display of strength that confirms the car from Brackley as the benchmark of the championship. Russell, starting from pole position, managed the tyre degradation perfectly and the pressure exerted in the final laps by Verstappen, taking his second victory of the season and also moving back up in the standings.

A race decided by management and strategy

The race developed at an extremely high pace from the opening laps. Russell kept the lead as the lights went out, while behind him Verstappen quickly made up ground by exploiting the good pace of the Red Bull updated for the home weekend.

The Dutchman remained constantly in the DRS zone in the second part of the race, but Russell never made a mistake, coolly controlling every attack attempt. Behind them Kimi Antonelli completed the podium after losing precious seconds during a Virtual Safety Car phase that did not reward Mercedes' strategy, preventing the team from taking a possible one-two.

Ferrari, from Saturday's dream to Sunday's disappointment

If Saturday had raised hopes of an important result, the race told a completely different story for the Maranello team.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had started with podium ambitions after an excellent qualifying, but the pace shown by the SF-26 over the long run proved insufficient to counter Mercedes and Red Bull.

Hamilton limited the damage with fifth place after a three-stop strategy, while Leclerc gradually slipped to eighth position, paying for tyre degradation and a car that was less competitive than expected.

Hamilton: “It was a reality check”

At the end of the race Lewis Hamilton did not hide his disappointment.

After the enthusiasm following the victory achieved in Spain, the seven-time world champion described the Austrian weekend as a true “reality check”, stressing that Ferrari still has a significant gap to close compared with Mercedes in race pace.

Team principal Fred Vasseur also acknowledged that the team will have to analyse carefully what happened, between a strategy that was not perfect and a pace lower than its main rivals.

Russell reopens the title fight

In addition to the 25 points scored, the victory allows George Russell to move back up to second place in the World Championship standings, reducing the gap to leader Kimi Antonelli.

The season thus enters an even more interesting phase, with Mercedes heading to the next round at Silverstone as favourite thanks to a competitive car on every type of circuit.

For Ferrari, meanwhile, an immediate response will be needed. After showing speed over one lap, the SF-26 will have to improve in race management if it wants to return to fighting consistently for wins.

Can Ferrari still fight for the World Championship?

Austria is probably the most disappointing weekend of the season for Ferrari. The potential shown in qualifying did not turn into results, while Mercedes demonstrated superiority both strategically and technically.

With Silverstone just around the corner, the team must react quickly. Another missed opportunity would risk compromising not only the chase for the world titles, but also the morale of a team that only a week ago seemed to have gone up a gear.
