Marco Bezzecchi arrives at the Qatar Grand Prix with the World Championship still open, even if the path remains narrow. After the Brazilian Grand Prix he had taken the lead of the MotoGP overall standings, a position he held until Assen, in the tenth round of the season, before Jorge Martín overtook him at the Dutch Grand Prix. From that point on, he never returned to the lead.
Today the Aprilia rider is third in the standings, 67 points behind Marc Márquez, who is ever closer to his eighth MotoGP title. According to AS, with three weekends still to come and 111 points available, to stay in contention after Qatar and before the final double-header in Portimão and Valencia he will not have to lose more than five points to the Ducati rider.
The run-up to Sepang left him with mixed feelings, but it did not extinguish his confidence. Bezzecchi explained that the team knew it had to face a difficult weekend, with the heat and humidity making everything harder, but that the aim was to use the work done in the previous races to get back to fighting for the top positions.
In Malaysia the rider from Romagna finished third in the Sprint and sixth in Sunday’s race, taking home a tally of 17 points. In his analysis, reported by Mundo Deportivo, he highlighted the progress compared to last year and the fact that both Aprilia riders finished Sunday in the top six.
Bezzecchi reiterated that he continues to believe in the title, while acknowledging that the situation is complicated and the gap is significant. He also explained that he wants to give his all every time he gets on the bike, for himself, for the team and for those who work every day on the RS-GP, while the paddock moves towards Qatar with the standings showing third place and a 67-point deficit to Márquez.
For the Aprilia rider, the message remains the same: the motivation is there, and as long as the maths leaves a chance he wants to try. Qatar therefore becomes a heavy step in his chase, in a season finale that still sees him in touch with the leading group, but with ever smaller margins.
