Qualifying on fire at Brands Hatch: double pole for Lionspeed

The first act of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup 2026 opens with a clear and decisive statement: the Porsche 911 GT3 R of the Lionspeed GP team is the car to beat. At the technical and demanding English circuit, Ricardo Feller and Bastian Buus secure a double pole position that perfectly reflects the pace shown in qualifying.

Feller set the pace in the first session with a clean and aggressive lap, built sector by sector on the perfect balance between precision and courage. Buus was even more incisive in the second session, able to lower the benchmark time further and put the seal on a perfect Saturday for the team.

The post-qualifying comments reflect confidence but also caution. Feller underlined how the work done on the set-up allowed the car to adapt perfectly to the track characteristics, while also stressing how crucial it will be to keep concentration in the race. Buus, for his part, spoke of a session made complicated by interruptions, but highlighted the strength of the technical package.

Ferrari, BMW and Mercedes chase: tiny gaps and total balance

If the top spot belongs to Porsche, the rest of the field tells a different story, one of balance and tiny margins. Ferrari immediately confirms itself as competitive, with an Arthur Leclerc able to break into the leading group thanks to an extremely effective lap.

BMW and Mercedes-AMG also show they have the credentials to fight for the top positions. The Team WRT puts a consistent and fast car on track, while the structure linked to Verstappen continues to grow, showing solidity and continuity.

The most significant figure remains the compactness of the group: the top ten are separated by just a few tenths, a sign of a championship that promises to be among the most hard-fought of recent years. In such a context, qualifying is fundamental, but not decisive.

Valentino Rossi eighth: strategy and race pace for the comeback

Among the most eagerly awaited names is Valentino Rossi, who ends the first qualifying session in eighth position. A result that will force him to start from the fourth row in Race 1, but one that does not erase the good feelings shown in the opening runs.

Rossi pointed out how traffic and the track’s constant improvement affected the final result, suggesting the potential was greater than the position achieved. The Italian driver, however, reiterated his confidence in race pace, a factor that could prove decisive on a circuit where management and strategy matter as much as outright speed.

The contribution of his team-mate will be decisive, especially ahead of Race 2, where the starting conditions could offer greater opportunities to the BMW #46.

Key moments and race variables: red flags and changing conditions

Qualifying was also influenced by a red flag in the second session, which interrupted the rhythm and prevented several drivers from completing their final attempt. A factor that may have partially shuffled the deck, leaving some regrets among the chasers.

Not all teams found the right balance. Aston Martin struggled to find competitiveness, while Lamborghini, still in development with the new GT3 project, showed signs of progress but remains far from the main benchmarks.

Race scenario: Porsche favourite, but Brands Hatch can change everything

Starting at Brands Hatch is a concrete advantage, especially because overtaking is difficult. However, the circuit’s history teaches that nothing is certain. Pit strategy, tyre management and traffic will be decisive elements.

Lionspeed starts as favourite, but Ferrari, BMW and Mercedes have shown they can stay in touch. In such a tight scenario, even a small mistake can overturn the balance.

The feeling is that qualifying has defined an initial hierarchy, but not yet a definitive one. The race will tell whether Porsche’s dominance is set to consolidate or whether the chasing group is ready to change the course of the weekend.
