The second round of the Sprint Cup season in the GT World Challenge Europe, held on the technical Brands Hatch circuit, provided an extremely significant picture of the balance of forces for the 2026 season. The English Sunday rewarded two different interpretations of the race: Ferrari's strategic solidity in Race 1 and Porsche's pure speed in Race 2.
On a short, tricky circuit where traffic plays a decisive role, managing the crucial phases proved more decisive than outright performance over a single lap.
The first race of Sunday saw victory go to the Ferrari 296 GT3 of the AF Corse team, driven by Arthur Leclerc and Thomas Neubauer, at the end of a complex race shaped by decisions from race control.
On track, car number 50 had not crossed the line in first place, but the penalties handed to the Mercedes-AMG of Team Verstappen Racing completely rewrote the finishing order. The sanctions, linked to irregularities in the race phases and limit management, gave Ferrari the official victory.
Leclerc, at the end of the race, stressed that the key had been “to stay clear-headed in a race where it was easy to lose control of the situation”, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining pace and precision on a track like Brands Hatch. Neubauer, meanwhile, underlined the work of the team, speaking of “impeccable strategy and constant communication, vital to seize every opportunity”.
Beyond the penalties, Ferrari showed an extremely solid approach. No mistakes in the pit stops, clean traffic management and the ability to always stay in the right window to take advantage of any developments. In an ever more competitive Sprint Cup, these details make the difference as much as, and more than, pure speed.
If Race 1 rewarded Ferrari's solidity, the second race restored centre stage to pure performance. The Porsche of the Lionspeed GP team, already among the protagonists in qualifying with a double pole position, converted its potential by taking victory in Race 2.
After seeing the best result slip away in the first heat, the team reacted with an authoritative race, built on constant pace and control of the key phases. Car #80 kept the lead, managing the pit stop without a blemish and containing the attempts of the pursuers.
After the race, the drivers highlighted how “the frustration of the first race was turned into motivation”, underlining their confidence in the Porsche technical package, particularly effective over one lap but finally incisive also in race management.
The Brands Hatch weekend reaffirmed a key concept for the 2026 season: no manufacturer has a clear advantage. Ferrari showed a superior ability in race management and in complex situations, while Porsche confirmed its status as the benchmark in qualifying and in pure pace phases.
This balance translates into an extremely open Sprint Cup, where every detail – from penalties to strategy, via pit stop execution – can determine the final result.
After Brands Hatch, the championship enters a crucial phase. The results of the English Sunday suggest that the fight for the title will be among several contenders, with Ferrari and Porsche at the forefront but with several outsiders ready to get involved.
Leclerc said that “the season is still long, but starting like this gives confidence”, while from the Porsche camp comes the awareness of having “the pace to win anywhere, if everything is executed to perfection”.
In a category where the margin is tiny, consistency will make the difference. Brands Hatch provided a first, clear indication: the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe will be decided as much in the details as in speed.
