The Dolphin G will arrive by the end of the year and probably represents the most strategic project ever launched by the brand in Europe.
BYD changes strategy: not just electric, now the goal is the mass market
In recent years BYD has become known above all for its electric range, quickly gaining market share thanks to aggressive prices and generous equipment. However, the slowdown in EV demand in Europe has pushed the Chinese brand to change approach.
The answer is called DM-i plug-in hybrid technology, a system that aims to combine very low consumption and great range without forcing motorists to rely exclusively on charging points.
And that is precisely where the Dolphin G comes from.
According to the previews that have emerged in recent weeks, the new compact model will use a 1.5 petrol engine paired with an electric unit capable of ensuring high range in full electric mode and extremely low consumption in everyday use.
BYD's aim is very clear: to convince those European motorists who are still wary of pure electric but ready to enter the world of electrification.
Production in Hungary: BYD wants to become a European manufacturer
The Hungarian factory will be the centre of the new Chinese offensive
The real news, though, is not just about the car. BYD will produce the Dolphin G in Hungary, a choice that says a lot about the group's ambitions.
This is not simply an industrial decision. Building in Europe means cutting logistics costs, limiting the impact of tariffs and above all getting closer to the European customer from an image point of view too.
BYD wants to stop being seen as “the cheap Chinese car” and turn itself into a global manufacturer capable of competing directly with the continent's big historic brands.
Stella Li herself, executive vice-president of the group, explained how European needs are very different from those of the Chinese market. In Europe, compact, practical cars that are easy to use in cities remain essential, while in China the market is moving towards ever larger models.
That is why the Dolphin G is a specifically European project.
BYD Dolphin G challenges Toyota Yaris and Renault Clio
The B-segment is the real battleground of the European market
Entering the European B-segment means entering the most competitive part of the entire car market.
Toyota Yaris has dominated for years thanks to its established hybrid technology and a reputation built over time. Renault Clio, meanwhile, remains one of the absolute benchmarks among compact cars thanks to the balance between design, comfort and efficient engines.
BYD wants to slot itself into exactly this space.
The Dolphin G is expected to measure between 4.1 and 4.3 metres, so it will be perfectly in line with its direct rivals. But the real strength could be value for money.
The Chinese group can in fact count on a huge advantage over traditional manufacturers: it produces batteries, electric motors and much of the strategic componentry in-house. An industrial structure that makes it possible to cut costs while maintaining high technological content.
If the rumours about prices are confirmed, BYD could launch a highly equipped plug-in hybrid compact car on the market at prices lower than European and Japanese rivals.
And it is precisely this scenario that worries the sector.
European design and Chinese technology: a new generation of compact cars is born
Dolphin G represents the new face of Chinese automotive industry
Until just a few years ago Chinese cars came to Europe chasing the market. Today, instead, they are studying and interpreting it.
The Dolphin G represents exactly this change.
The first information speaks of a cleaner design, closer to European taste, with less eccentric lines than many Asian models of the past. The interior should also follow the same philosophy, focusing on technology, digitalisation and perceived quality.
BYD knows perfectly well that in Europe price alone is no longer enough. To convince customers used to historic brands, it is necessary to build a strong, modern and credible identity.
And that is where the Dolphin G project takes on a much broader value than the simple launch of a new car.
The European market is really changing
Historic manufacturers can no longer underestimate China
The arrival of the Dolphin G confirms a transformation that is now obvious in the European automotive sector.
Chinese brands are no longer looking for space only in emerging electric segments or low-cost niches. Now they are aiming directly at the heart of the market, that of compact and hybrid cars that generate the most important volumes.
For Toyota, Renault and the other European manufacturers, the real risk is not only price competition. It is the speed with which companies like BYD are evolving quality, technology and production capacity.
The new Dolphin G could be remembered as the model that definitively opened a new phase of motoring in Europe.
And this time the challenge comes directly from the centre of the market.
