A dramatic twist in the rally world championship: Portugal turns the standings on their head in the final stages
The 2026 Rally del Portogallo changed completely over just a few kilometres. When Sébastien Ogier seemed set for yet another victory in his extraordinary career, a puncture in SS22 completely overturned the overall standings, opening the door to Thierry Neuville.
An incredible finale, worthy of the tradition of the rally world championship, in one of the toughest and most selective events on the entire WRC calendar. Dust, mud, rain and broken roads turned Portugal into a true survival race, where experience and management became just as decisive as outright speed.
For three days Ogier had given the impression of having total control of the situation. The Frenchman in the Toyota had built his advantage stage by stage, reading the terrain perfectly and managing the tyres masterfully. Then, all of a sudden, the collapse.
Ogier dominates Rally Portugal: the puncture changes everything
Toyota loses a victory that now seemed certain
Ogier’s race had been practically impeccable up to the drama of SS22. The French champion had taken control of the rally already in the middle phase of Saturday, progressively increasing his margin over his rivals thanks to a pace that the other contenders in the world championship could not match.
On the long and battered stages in northern Portugal, Ogier had made the difference especially in the more technical sections, where precision and driving feel become fundamental. The Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 had proved perfectly balanced on a surface made unpredictable by the weather conditions.
Ogier himself, in interviews given during the weekend, had explained how complicated it was to find the right balance between attack and preserving the car. An almost perfect run, however, was wiped out by a single incident.
The puncture in SS22 destroyed any chance of victory. The Frenchman was forced to slow down drastically, losing precious seconds and slipping out of the leading positions just at the decisive moment of the rally.
Thierry Neuville takes advantage of the chaos and flies into the lead
Hyundai remains in the running for the WRC world title
Taking over from Ogier was Thierry Neuville. The Hyundai driver built his weekend on consistency and on the ability to stay close to the front without taking excessive risks in the most difficult conditions.
The Belgian never really seemed in a position to attack Ogier in terms of outright pace, but he had the merit of always staying in the fight. A strategy that proved decisive when the final twist arrived.
Neuville had repeatedly underlined how the Rally del Portogallo had become a lottery in the final stages, with stones breaking through and lines getting dirtier and dirtier with each pass. And it was precisely that devastated surface that let Ogier down.
With the Frenchman slowed by the puncture, the Hyundai driver suddenly found himself the overall leader with just one stage to go. A huge opportunity both for victory in the race and to revive his title hopes.
2026 Rally Portugal: Evans and Solberg unexpected protagonists
The WRC world championship confirms balance and spectacle
Behind the duel between Ogier and Neuville, Rally Portugal also confirmed the great balance of the 2026 world championship. Elfyn Evans drove an extremely intelligent race, avoiding mistakes and taking advantage of the final chaos to climb back up the order.
Oliver Solberg also delivered an excellent performance, after a very aggressive weekend especially on the dirtier stages. The young driver showed speed and personality, managing to establish himself firmly in the fight for the podium against much more experienced rivals.
The race conditions, however, made every prediction impossible. Intermittent rain and the deterioration of the surface put strategies, set-ups and tyres under pressure, increasing the risk of mistakes and technical problems.
Adrien Fourmaux and Takamoto Katsuta also endured a rally of constant ups and downs, confirming just how tough Portugal is as one of the hardest events in the entire world championship.
WRC 2026: Portugal reopens the championship
Neuville can change the rally world season
The finale of Rally Portugal could prove to be a key turning point in the race for the 2026 WRC title. A Neuville victory would in fact allow Hyundai to completely reopen the world championship, reducing the gap to Toyota.
For Ogier, meanwhile, there is the bitterness of a race dominated and then lost at the last moment. A very heavy blow, especially considering the pace shown throughout the weekend.
Portugal once again confirms why it is considered one of the most iconic events in the rally world championship. A race capable of bringing out talent, strategy and mental strength, where one hidden stone or one wrong line is enough to erase days of total domination.
And it is precisely this unpredictability that makes the WRC one of the most spectacular competitions in world motorsport.
