Twist on the Portuguese roads: a puncture takes victory away from Ogier

The Portugal Rally 2026 rightfully goes down as one of the most spectacular and unpredictable events of recent WRC World Championship seasons. When everything seemed set up for yet another Sébastien Ogier feat, the finale completely rewrote the standings. Thierry Neuville took victory by taking advantage of the sensational puncture that hit the Frenchman in the decisive stages of the race, thus handing Hyundai a vital success for the season.

The gravel roads of northern Portugal once again confirmed all their harshness. Dust, sudden rain, mud and hidden rocks turned the weekend into a constant test of mechanical and mental endurance. In this setting Neuville managed to stay composed until the very last metre, making the most of every available opportunity.

For Hyundai, it is a victory of enormous weight, both from a technical point of view and for the morale of the team, which in recent weeks had looked in difficulty compared with the pace shown by Toyota.

Ogier dominates the rally but fate changes everything in the finale

For three days Sébastien Ogier had simply seemed untouchable. The Toyota driver had built his advantage special stage after special stage, imposing an impressive pace especially on Saturday, when many rivals had to deal with grip and tyre management issues.

The Frenchman’s experience showed in every timed sector. Ogier read the terrain perfectly, making the most of clean lines and near-surgical precision in the roughest sections. The lead seemed all but secure, with over twenty seconds in hand over the chasers a few stages from the finish.

Then the rally suddenly changed face.

The puncture that decides the Portugal Rally

On the penultimate special stage, a puncture destroyed the advantage Ogier had built. The Frenchman was forced to slow down dramatically, losing precious seconds and seeing victory, which seemed certain, slip away.

The image of the slowing Toyota in the final stretch became the symbol of a dramatic Sunday for the Japanese team. Ogier ended the rally bitterly disappointed, aware that he had probably driven the most convincing race of the weekend without managing to turn it into victory.

Thierry Neuville perfect in management: “We believed in victory until the end”

Thierry Neuville built his success with intelligence and cool head. The Belgian never lost touch with the leaders, avoiding mistakes in the most delicate phases of the rally and always maintaining an extremely competitive pace.

After the race, the Hyundai driver underlined the importance of tyre management and constant adaptation to the conditions of the special stages, which changed radically over the course of the weekend. Neuville explained how the team worked above all on consistency, knowing that the Portugal Rally often rewards those who manage to survive the unexpected.

Hyundai returns to the forefront in the WRC World Championship

The Portuguese success represents an important turning point for Hyundai. After a complicated start to the season, the Korean team regains confidence and big points in the world title fight. The i20 N Rally1 looked particularly effective on the most technical special stages, especially when the surface became more rutted and tricky.

Neuville’s victory also allows the title race to be reopened completely, cutting the gap to Toyota both in the drivers’ standings and among the constructors.

Solberg surprises again, Evans limits the damage

Behind Neuville, Oliver Solberg shone, author of one of the best weekends of his career in the WRC. The Swede showed speed, maturity and a remarkable ability to adapt to the difficult Portuguese conditions.

Solberg remained consistently in the leading positions without making major mistakes, taking a second place that definitively confirms his growth within the world rally scene.

Third place instead for Elfyn Evans, who preferred a more conservative strategy, thinking above all about the championship. The Welshman avoided unnecessary risks in the final stages, collecting valuable points in championship terms.

WRC World Championship 2026 increasingly balanced

The Portugal Rally confirms an obvious fact: the WRC World Championship 2026 is wide open. Toyota remains the benchmark in terms of consistency, but Hyundai has shown it can return to being competitive on any surface.

The differences between the main protagonists are minimal and every detail can decide a rally. A tyre choice, a wrong line or a puncture can completely overturn the result, as happened on the Portuguese roads.

And it is precisely this unpredictability that makes the championship increasingly spectacular. Neuville leaves Portugal with a hugely important victory and with the feeling of having definitively reopened the world title fight. Ogier, meanwhile, leaves Portugal with the regret of a triumph that slipped away just a few kilometres from the finish.
