Bulega, a solo ride that smells of the title

Portimão crowns Nicolò Bulega as the cover star of this opening phase of the WorldSBK 2026 season. Race 2, the final act of the Portuguese weekend, turns into a display of absolute strength: pole position, perfect start and leadership never in doubt until the chequered flag.

The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider completes an impeccable treble (Race 1, Superpole Race and Race 2), repeating what he already did in Australia and cementing a technical and mental superiority that, at this point in the championship, already looks structural.

On the undulating Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, a circuit among the most technical and physically demanding on the calendar, Bulega imposed an unreachable pace, managing the race with composure and never giving the chasers an opening.

The race: pace, management and total control

As the lights go out, Bulega keeps the lead, while a battle immediately ignites behind him. Initially it is Alex Lowes who slots in among the chasers, but the real protagonist of the middle phase becomes Miguel Oliveira, driven on by the home crowd and able to climb up to second place in the early laps.

However, Ducati’s solidity emerges as the laps go by:

Iker Lecuona finds the pace and moves back up into second place consistently

Oliveira defends the podium with determination

Lowes is forced to drop back to the foot of the podium

In the closing laps nothing happens at the front: Bulega manages, controls and finishes with a margin, sealing a victory that was never really in doubt.

Top 5 Race 2 – Portimão 2026:

Nicolò Bulega (Ducati)

Iker Lecuona (Ducati)

Miguel Oliveira (BMW)

Alex Lowes (Bimota-Kawasaki)

Sam Lowes (Ducati)

Also worth noting are the good performances of the Italians:

Lorenzo Baldassarri a solid sixth

Danilo Petrucci competitive but out of the fight for the podium

Ducati in charge, but Lecuona is growing

If Bulega is the absolute benchmark, the Portuguese weekend also highlighted the growth of Iker Lecuona. The Spaniard scores three second places over the weekend, showing an increasingly effective adaptation to the Panigale V4 R and putting himself forward as the internal first challenger.

Also excellent was the showing of Miguel Oliveira, who in front of his home crowd secures three podiums in three races: an important sign for BMW, still looking for the consistency needed to trouble Ducati over the long term.

World standings: Bulega already pulling away

The Portimão round redraws the championship balance in clear fashion. After two events (Australia and Portugal), the riders’ standings speak very clearly:

Top 5 WorldSBK 2026 standings:

Nicolò Bulega – 99 points

Axel Bassani – 52

Iker Lecuona – 48

Miguel Oliveira – 40

Alex Lowes – 35

The most impressive figure is the margin: Bulega has already accumulated almost twice as many points as the first chaser. An advantage built not only with wins, but with devastating consistency: ten consecutive victories, a run that weighs like a boulder on the rivals’ ambitions.

Outlook: a championship already heading one way?

It is too early to talk about a verdict, but the signs are unequivocal. Ducati has found a superior technical balance and Bulega is approaching the season with veteran-like maturity.

The chasers have clear tasks:

Bassani must rediscover incisiveness

Lecuona is called upon to make the decisive step

BMW with Oliveira must turn podiums into victories

The next test will be Assen, a historic and more flowing circuit, where any cracks in the current dominance will emerge.

Conclusion

Portimão 2026 will remain in the record books as the weekend of confirmation: Bulega is no longer a promise, but the absolute benchmark of modern Superbike.

And while the championship prepares to come alive, one question hangs in the paddock:
who can really stop him?
