The 2026 World Superbike Championship has arrived at Misano, and the opening day delivered a familiar story: Nicolò Bulega is once again the rider everyone has to beat.
Racing in front of his home crowd at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the Ducati star topped the combined timesheets and immediately established himself as the benchmark of the Emilia-Romagna Round. Fast over a single lap and consistently impressive on race pace, Bulega looked completely in control throughout Friday’s action.
After dominating much of the season so far, the championship leader appears to have found another circuit perfectly suited to both his riding style and the strengths of the Ducati Panigale V4 R. More importantly, he continues to display the confidence and maturity of a rider fully aware that a world title is now within reach.
While records and statistics continue to follow him, Bulega remains focused on the bigger picture: extending his championship advantage and taking another step toward WorldSBK glory.
Few events carry as much significance for Ducati as the Misano round. The Italian circuit is effectively the manufacturer’s home race, attracting thousands of passionate fans dressed in red and creating an atmosphere unlike any other on the calendar.
It is therefore no surprise that expectations surrounding Bulega are sky-high. Yet the Italian rider has handled the pressure with remarkable composure. Rather than focusing on winning streaks or historical milestones, he continues to approach every weekend with the mindset of a championship contender determined to maximise points.
His rise over the past two seasons has been extraordinary. Once regarded as one of the championship’s brightest prospects, he has now become the reference point for the entire WorldSBK field. Friday’s performance at Misano only reinforced that status.
Among the riders capable of challenging Ducati’s dominance, Iker Lecuona showed the strongest pace throughout the day. The Spaniard consistently remained near the top of the standings despite suffering a late crash that fortunately had no major consequences.
The former MotoGP rider arrives at Misano with renewed confidence and appears determined to fight for podium positions throughout the weekend. However, the gap shown in race simulations suggests there is still work to do if he hopes to match Bulega over a full race distance.
One of Friday’s biggest surprises came from fellow Italian Yari Montella. The young rider continued his impressive progression by placing himself among the frontrunners and could emerge as one of the standout performers of the weekend.
Meanwhile, two-time World Champion Álvaro Bautista adopted a more cautious approach. The experienced Spaniard is still working to find the ideal setup and plans to make a bigger impact once qualifying and racing begin.
While his outright speed was already impressive, it was Bulega’s consistency during longer runs that truly caught the attention of the paddock.
Throughout the day, the Ducati rider repeatedly produced competitive lap times without suffering significant tyre degradation. On a demanding circuit such as Misano, where high temperatures and abrasive asphalt often play a decisive role, that consistency could become a major weapon during the races.
If Friday’s pace is anything to go by, his rivals will need something special to prevent another Ducati victory.
Practice sessions have provided valuable indications, but the Emilia-Romagna Round will truly come alive with Saturday’s Superpole and Race 1.
Bulega enters qualifying as the overwhelming favourite for pole position after leading every meaningful benchmark during Friday’s sessions. Behind him, riders such as Lecuona, Bautista and the rest of the chasing pack will be searching for a way to close the gap and disrupt Ducati’s momentum.
The challenge will not be easy.
Misano has often produced memorable WorldSBK battles, but based on the evidence from the opening day, the benchmark remains clear. Every rider in the field is chasing the same target: Nicolò Bulega.
There is still a long way to go before the 2026 title is decided, but every race weekend seems to strengthen Bulega’s credentials as the championship favourite.
A victory at Misano would carry special significance. Winning in front of Ducati’s home fans would not only increase his points advantage but also send another powerful message to the rest of the field.
After Friday’s dominant display, the outlook appears increasingly familiar: the competition is trying to catch up, while Nicolò Bulega continues to set the standard in World Superbike.
