Max Verstappen conquers the Nürburgring but misses out on victory in the end

The victory slipped away when it seemed to be firmly in the hands of Team Verstappen Racing, but the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours still confirmed Max Verstappen as one of the great protagonists of modern endurance motorsport. At the legendary Nordschleife, the world champion of Formula 1 impressed with speed, maturity and adaptability, driving the Mercedes-AMG GT3 number 3 towards a race that for more than twenty hours seemed perfect.

On his outright debut in the great German classic, Verstappen drove with the authority of a specialist. In the night hours, considered by everyone the hardest moment of the race, the Dutchman built the decisive advantage thanks to very fast, error-free stints, fuelling the excitement of the fans who turned out in their thousands along the 25 kilometres of the Nürburgring.

In the days leading up to the start, Verstappen had already explained how much this race meant to him: “The Nürburgring is one of the most incredible circuits in the world. Here a driver can really make the difference”. A sentence that during the race was confirmed lap after lap.

A perfect race until the final twist

Verstappen dominates the night of the Nordschleife

The Mercedes-AMG GT3 shared with Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon and Daniel Juncadella maintained an impressive pace from the very first hours, managing traffic, temperature changes and track conditions that were often unpredictable in the best possible way.

Verstappen stood out above all in managing traffic among the cars from the lower classes, one of the most complex aspects of the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The Dutchman kept a consistent pace without ever taking unnecessary risks, showing a level of clarity that surprised even many endurance drivers.

In the paddock, several insiders underlined how quickly Verstappen adapted to GT dynamics. Lucas Auer himself, the Dutchman’s team-mate, praised the work done by the four-time world champion: “Max was incredible. It looked like he had been racing these events for years”.

More than 350 thousand spectators for the most anticipated race of the year

The 2026 edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours recorded record numbers, with more than 350 thousand fans present over the weekend. Verstappen’s presence turned the German race into a global media event, attracting attention far beyond the traditional endurance audience.

The Nordschleife camping areas were filled with orange flags and the atmosphere around the race recalled that of the great Formula 1 events. Many GT drivers also admitted they had never seen such an atmosphere in recent years.

Mechanical failure ends Team Verstappen Racing’s dream

The transmission failure changes the race

When a little more than three hours remained until the end, the Mercedes-AMG number 3 seemed to be heading for victory. Then, suddenly, everything changed.

During a stint by Daniel Juncadella, the car suffered a serious technical problem at the rear. The Spanish driver immediately sensed something was wrong and slowed down to bring the car to the pits, avoiding even worse damage.

The team later confirmed the failure of the driveshaft, a problem that definitively compromised the fight for victory.

Juncadella, visibly disappointed after returning to the pits, described those moments bitterly: “I could feel something was wrong a few corners before it failed. It was devastating because we had the race under control”.

In Team Verstappen Racing’s garage, silence replaced the excitement built up throughout the night. The mechanics attempted a long repair to get the car back on track, but the dream of victory had already gone.

Verstappen: “It hurts to lose like this”

After the race, Verstappen made no secret of his disappointment at a result that slipped away at the most important moment of the weekend.

“It hurts to lose in this way because we really had a great chance to win”, the Dutchman explained to the media present in the paddock. “The car was competitive throughout the race and the team did an incredible job”.

Despite the disappointment, Verstappen also wanted to underline the value of the experience he lived at the Nürburgring: “It was one of the most intense races I have ever done. Racing here at night, with this crowd, is something special”.

Words that once again confirm the strong bond created between the Red Bull champion and the endurance world.

Mercedes wins the Nürburgring 24 Hours, but Verstappen remains the main story

Success for the Mercedes-AMG number 80

Officially winning the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours was the Mercedes-AMG GT3 number 80 driven by Maro Engel, Luca Stolz, Fabian Schiller and Maxime Martin, protagonists of an extremely solid race in the decisive phases.

Maro Engel, after the finish, openly acknowledged the strength shown by Team Verstappen Racing throughout almost the entire race: “They were incredibly fast. Honestly, they seemed to have something extra compared with everyone else”.

A statement that further certifies just how close Verstappen and his team-mates were to a victory that would have had enormous symbolic value.

Verstappen’s endurance future is already firing up the paddock

Despite the missed success, the Nürburgring has probably opened a new chapter in Verstappen’s career. The speed shown in the GT3, combined with the ability to adapt immediately to endurance dynamics, has convinced many observers that the Dutch champion could also become competitive in the most prestigious endurance races.

There is already a lot of talk in the paddock about a possible future at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. And looking at what he showed at the Nürburgring, the idea now seems much less far away than it did only a few months ago.
