Ferrari Chasing a Historic Third Consecutive Victory
Pressure is inevitably building around Maranello. Following back-to-back victories in recent years, Ferrari arrives at Le Mans carrying the expectations that come with being the benchmark of the Hypercar era.
Qualifying delivered mixed signals for the Italian manufacturer. The two factory-entered Ferrari 499P cars comfortably progressed into the decisive sessions, but neither displayed the outright dominance that many expected. However, within the team there is little concern.
Le Mans has never been won on Saturday morning. Over twenty-four hours, tyre management, fuel strategy, reliability and traffic navigation often prove far more important than a single flying lap.
Ferrari’s recent success has been built on exactly those strengths. The feeling throughout the paddock is that the team has spent much of practice focusing on race pace rather than chasing headlines in qualifying.
The Surprise Elimination of the No. 83 Ferrari
One of the biggest stories of qualifying was the unexpected elimination of the No. 83 Ferrari from the Hyperpole battle.
The car that claimed overall victory last year failed to deliver a clean lap when it mattered most, leaving it outside the fight for pole position. While the result was surprising, few believe it rules the crew out of contention for victory.
History repeatedly shows that Le Mans is won during the long hours of darkness rather than in qualifying. Starting further down the order may complicate the task, but it certainly does not end Ferrari’s hopes.
Alpine Excites the Home Crowd
While Ferrari appeared focused on race preparation, Alpine chose to make a statement.
The French manufacturer impressed throughout the opening sessions, confirming the progress of a programme that only recently was considered a work in progress. The No. 35 entry demonstrated impressive one-lap pace, generating excitement among the thousands of French fans packed into the grandstands.
Confidence inside the team continues to grow. Alpine is no longer viewed as a participant simply gathering experience at the front of the field. Instead, the French squad appears ready to challenge for a major result on home soil.
A podium finish would represent a landmark achievement for the manufacturer and further validate the rapid development of its Hypercar project.
Cadillac Targets Pole Position and a Historic Triumph
Among the standout performers of race week so far is Cadillac.
The American manufacturer, operating in partnership with Jota, continues to show impressive progress. The V-Series.R has looked particularly strong around the unique characteristics of Le Mans, combining excellent straight-line speed with strong high-speed stability.
Pole position remains a realistic objective, but within the Cadillac camp there is a growing belief that much more could be possible. Ending Ferrari’s winning streak and delivering a historic American victory at Le Mans is no longer viewed as an unrealistic dream.
Based on the pace shown so far, Cadillac appears capable of challenging for the biggest prize of all.
Toyota Quietly Prepares Its Response
Anyone familiar with Le Mans knows better than to underestimate Toyota.
The Japanese manufacturer remains one of the most experienced operations in endurance racing and arrives at Le Mans determined to reclaim the crown it held for much of the previous decade.
The GR010 Hybrid has not dominated the headlines during practice and qualifying, but that may be exactly the point. Toyota has often adopted a conservative approach during race week before revealing its true pace once the race begins.
The team’s experience, strategic discipline and operational excellence make it one of the strongest contenders despite the attention currently surrounding Ferrari, Cadillac and Alpine.
The Most Competitive Hypercar Era Yet
Perhaps the biggest story of Le Mans 2026 is the extraordinary level of competition within the Hypercar class.
Never before has the category featured so many manufacturers capable of fighting for overall victory. Tiny margins separate the leading teams, and drivers throughout the paddock have repeatedly highlighted how difficult it is to identify a clear favourite.
The era of dominant victories appears to be over. Modern Le Mans has become a battle of execution, strategy and endurance, where mistakes can prove far more costly than a lack of outright speed.
That unpredictability is precisely what makes this edition so fascinating.
Hyperpole Sets the Stage for the Main Event
Thursday’s Hyperpole session will provide the first direct confrontation between the leading contenders and determine the most prestigious positions on the starting grid.
Yet nobody inside the paddock believes the race will be decided there.
The real challenge begins on Saturday afternoon when the field takes the green flag for twenty-four hours of relentless competition.
Ferrari is chasing history. Cadillac is pursuing a breakthrough victory. Alpine dreams of glory in front of its home crowd. Toyota is preparing its comeback.
All the ingredients are in place for what could become one of the greatest editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in recent memory.
