Ten years later, Sepang is still making noise. Not only in the memories of MotoGP fans, but also inside the paddock, where the duel between Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez remains one of the most discussed chapters of the modern era of the World Championship. The new official documentary dedicated to the 2015 season has brought to light unpublished images, never-broadcast conversations and above all the emotions experienced by Rossi in the hours after the Malaysian race that changed the history of that championship.

The material released in the last few hours shows a furious Valentino Rossi, mentally shaken and convinced that what happened on track was not just the result of a normal sporting battle. The images tell the most human and fragile side of the nine times world champion, immersed in a tension that, as the laps went by, turned into anger and frustration.

Valentino Rossi, the pressure and the chaos of Sepang

In the documentary, very strong words emerge, spoken by the rider from Tavullia immediately after the contact with Marc Márquez at turn 14. Rossi says he lost his clarity during the race, crushed by the pressure and the constant battle with the Spaniard.

The number 46 describes a situation that became almost unmanageable lap after lap. According to his reconstruction, Márquez would have slowed the pace to deliberately hinder him, jeopardising the chase for the world title against Jorge Lorenzo.

The tension built up in the previous weeks had already turned that weekend into a powder keg. After Phillip Island, Rossi openly accused Márquez of helping Lorenzo in the title fight. Heavy statements that completely changed the atmosphere inside the MotoGP paddock and prepared the ground for the showdown in Sepang.

The contact at turn 14 and the decisive penalty

The key moment came on the seventh lap of the Malaysian race. After a long series of aggressive overtakes, Rossi and Márquez ran wide at turn 14, with the Spaniard crashing after contact with the Yamaha of the Italian rider.

The incident was immediately analysed by Race Direction, which decided to penalise Rossi with three points on his licence. A sanction destined to change the end of the season: the Yamaha rider was forced to start from last place in the Valencia GP, the final round of the World Championship.

Despite an extraordinary comeback to fourth place, Rossi saw his tenth world title slip away, with Jorge Lorenzo taking the crown instead. An outcome that fuelled endless controversy and split the MotoGP world between those who backed Race Direction's line and those who, instead, felt the penalty imposed on the Italian was excessive.

Marc Márquez and a rivalry that defined an era

Ten years on, the relationship between Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez remains cold. The documentary shows how Sepang represented the definitive breaking point between two generations of champions.

Márquez, then 22 and already a two-time MotoGP world champion, was accused by Rossi of having raced with the aim of harming him rather than winning the race. An accusation that the Spanish rider has always denied, claiming he was simply fighting as he would have done with any other rival.

In the years that followed, the duel between the two took on almost symbolic overtones, becoming much more than a simple sporting rivalry. On one side was the experience and charisma of Rossi, on the other the aggression and talent of Márquez. Two opposing views of competition that inevitably ended up clashing.

Why the documentary is sparking debate among fans

The documentary's release immediately reignited the debate among fans and insiders. The unpublished images show a very emotional behind-the-scenes setting, in which nervousness, tension and accusations that have never fully died down emerge.

For many fans, the story confirms just how isolated and under pressure Rossi felt in the final races of 2015. Others, however, believe the documentary offers a reading too close to the Italian rider's version.

In any case, the “Sepang Clash” remains one of the most iconic and controversial events in MotoGP history. An episode that even today divides the public, fuels debate and shows how much that World Championship has remained etched in the collective memory of fans.

And that is precisely why, ten years later, Sepang continues to be more than just a race. It is still an open sporting wound.
