Jorge Martin recalls his unforgettable meeting with Valentino Rossi as a child during the Valencia Grand Prix.
Ultimogiro Newsroom · 23 May 2026 · 3 min read

In the world of MotoGP there are historic rivalries, epic duels and champions destined to leave an indelible mark. Then there are stories that manage to bring everything back to the most authentic essence of motorcycling: that of a child in front of his idol. That is the case of Jorge Martin, who in the last few hours has moved fans and the paddock by telling an anecdote linked to Valentino Rossi.
The Spaniard, now one of the standout stars of MotoGP and a leading figure in the Aprilia project, recalled an episode experienced in 2006 during the Valencia Grand Prix. At the time Martin was only eight years old and Rossi was the absolute symbol of world motorcycling.
An encounter that lasted a few seconds, but remained engraved in the memory of the rider from Madrid.
In interviews in the paddock, Martin explained how he managed to get close to Valentino Rossi thanks to his mother’s help, amid a huge crowd of fans and enthusiasts. Once he reached the Italian champion, something happened that seemed unreal to little Jorge.
“He put his hand on my head,” Martin said with a smile, recalling that moment with genuine emotion.
From there comes the anecdote that quickly went around social media and the MotoGP paddock.
“For a week I didn’t want to wash my hair because Valentino had touched me.”
A phrase that perfectly shows what Rossi represented for the generation of riders who grew up between the 2000s and the dominance of number 46.
In the Spaniard’s account, the full symbolic dimension of Valentino Rossi in MotoGP history emerges. For Martin, as for many other current riders, Rossi was not just a champion to watch on television, but the very reason to start racing.
The Aprilia rider then recalled how special it was to share the track with the nine-time world champion in the final seasons of the rider from Pesaro’s career. A generational shift that today takes on an even stronger meaning.
From an emotional child in the Valencia paddock to a direct rival in MotoGP: Jorge Martin’s journey perfectly captures the impact Rossi had on modern motorcycling.
It is no coincidence that many of the current grid’s leading names, from Bagnaia to Bezzecchi and Martin himself, have repeatedly pointed to Valentino as a source of inspiration.
Today Jorge Martin is living a completely different phase of his career. After winning the world title and moving to Aprilia, the Spaniard is called upon to lead the Noale project towards a new world title challenge.
His aggressive mindset, one-lap speed and ability to manage pressure have turned him into one of the most complete riders in modern MotoGP. Yet behind the determined champion who fights for podiums and victories, that child who looked at Valentino Rossi as an unreachable legend still remains.
It is precisely this contrast that made the story so powerful in the eyes of fans. In a paddock increasingly dominated by data, strategies and technology, Martin’s anecdote brought the human side of sport back to the centre.
Because before world titles, rivalries and battles on track, every rider was simply a fan with a dream. And for an entire generation, that dream had the number 46.
